Research highlight: Professor Elsdon Storey's neuroscience projects

Professor Elsdon Storey’s research involvement spans a broad spectrum of neuroscience, from the laboratory to large clinical trials.  His laboratory work, conducted with the assistance of Ms Volga Tarlac, covers neurotransmitter and receptor analysis in mice bred to develop ataxia (incoordination), in a search for rational symptomatic treatments for patients with ataxias.
Prof Storey is keen to develop better methods of measuring upper limb ataxia, both for more accurate diagnosis and for improving the outcome measures used for trials.  Monash PhD student Evelyn Lindsay and Deakin University robotics expert Zoran Najdovski are collaborators in this work.

Further, Prof Storey is heavily involved in the cognitive aspects of two large investigator-driven trials in the healthy elderly – ASPREE (aspirin) and STAREE (cholesterol-lowering statin therapy) through his adjunct attachment to the Monash Department of Epidemiology & Preventive Medicine.  He is also involved in a number of related subtrials, including MRI and retinal imaging, hearing, and sleep-disordered breathing – especially as related to cognition.

Prof Storey will be retiring in mid-2016, but will be continuing his research interests via an Honorary/Adjunct appointment to the Monash Central Clinical School. See CCS Department of Neuroscience page for more detail.
